Guys Read

January 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So you’re a guy and it’s cold and snowy/rainy and everything on tv is a rerun and you’re tired of your video games and you’re bored crazy. Reading a book might not be on your “kill-boredom” list, but…

Have I got a website for you!

Guys Read (www.guysread.com) is a website designed to help guys find good books. Created by Jon Scieszka (he wrote Math Curse and Squids will be Squids and lots more) to help boys find stuff they like to read, because he gets that most of the books you have to read are not the books that make you like reading. You can check out other guys’ recommendations or ask “GUY” (aka a snazzy search engine) what he thinks you might like.

Maybe you’ll be a little happier this winter.

Derby Girl by Shauna Cross

Derby Girl by Shauna Cross

Blue-haired 16 year-old Bliss Cavandar wants out of her tiny, backwards town of Bodeen Texas. She wants away from her country-music loving classmates and her pagent-obsessed mother who holds fast to her dream of Bliss becoming the next Miss Bluebonnet. Bliss and her best friend Pash do what they can to rebel in their little town, but when they sneak off to Austin to watch a roller derby bout, Bliss feels like she’s finally found her niche. Lying to her parents and alienating her only friend pave the way for an awesome time on skates and hanging with “señior smoulder”, bass player Oliver. When things come crashing down, Bliss learns a lot about her self and her family in an overly-tidy, Hollywood-ready ending. Cross’ knowledge of the energy and spirit of roller derby (she plays) make those scenes ring true.

Ellen Page has signed on to play Bliss in the movie adaptation (currently titled: Whip It) which will be directed by Drew Barrymore.

The Pursuit of Happiness in fiction

January 13, 2008 · Leave a Comment

What is the pursuit of happiness?

Many (maybe most) fiction books are about characters looking for happiness in one form or another. Some books are about people looking for a good life – the “American Dream” if you will. Many of the books on the Pursuit of Happiness bookshelf deal with that kind of pursuit. Books like Little House on the Prairie & The Grapes of Wrath focus on families looking for a better life, with varying success.

There are also books with characters looking for happiness in a more immediate way. Looking for love. For family. For answers. Much of today’s teen fiction is about this kind of pursuit.

What are your favorite books? How are the characters “pursuing happiness”? At the end of the stories, have the main characters found what they thought would make them happy? Have they found happiness?

Think about it.
