Computers for you

April 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

We’ve just added two teen-only pcs in the Teen Space at the Central Library. These computers have internet access and the Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) and work the same as the other internet computers. You will need your library card number and you get one hour a day. Check at the information/reference desk if you don’t have your/a card.

Remember, using more than an hour (or using someone else’s card) can get you booted off all library computers for a month (or more).

PLUS:

We just added NextReads, an email service that sends book suggestions to you monthly. It’s pretty cool.

Have you downloaded a book yet? NW Anytime Library lets you check out and download audio books. These don’t work on ipods yet, but will work on almost all other portable mp3 devices. Getting tired of your playlists? Try a book.

Super special deluxe game night

April 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Do you like playing games? Do you like eating pizza? Do you like being around people? If you answer yes to one or more of these questions, game night may be the place for you. Now with SSB Brawl for the wii! Now with more pizza! (Really, we won’t run out in the first 5 minutes – maybe.)

Stop by and hang out and play games and eat. Or just play games. Or just eat. It’s up to you. Plus, we won’t have a game night in May, just the SSB Brawl Tourney (we’ll have other games there, too, but it’s during the day on a weekend, so can’t be called “game night”) so you probably want to get your game night fix now. Here are the details on game night in April:

MONDAY APRIL 21st
6-7:30

Lecture Room (across from the Children’s Dept.)
210 Central Ave Bellingham
Pizza from Rudy’s Pizzeria

BE THERE OR BE SOMEWHERE ELSE!

TAC talk

April 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Thanks to those of you who came to the first Teen Advisory Council meeting yesterday. Even though it was a small group, I think you made a lot of good recommendations and had some outstanding ideas.

The next meeting is Thursday, May 15, from 4:50 to 5:30 in the conference room (across from the kids’ dept). We will spend the next meeting looking at what we can really do to make the Teen Space (on land) more teen-friendly (I’ll bring catalogs and we’ll take a field trip to the Teen Space), and planning the Teen Book Club, which will start up in the Summer. And I’ll bring new books. And cookies.

If you are interested in learning more about or being part of TAC, take a look at the form below (or send me an email – see sidebar). Space is limited.

Protecting the manga

April 9, 2008 · Leave a Comment

If you’ve been in the Central Library looking for teen graphic novels, you may have been met withdeath note cover superheroes and comix but a shocking lack of manga. Here’s the deal, the manga has been targeted by a thief or thieves over the last couple of months. Over 60 volumes of manga have walked out of the library without being checked out. And none are returning… Whoever is taking them is not only taking them from the library, he/she is taking them from you and your friends and anyone else who wants to read the complete run of Death Note (8 vols. are gone) or Fruits Basket (11 vols. are gone) and many more series.

Fruits Basket coverFor now, we’ve moved the manga to an area behind the information desk. You can come browse the collection any time, just ask the librarian on duty. We hate keeping these books “behind the desk” but at least now they are still available to check out.

Unshelved Book Club

April 3, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Every Sunday, Unshelved publishes a “Book Club” cartoon summary of a book. Lots of them are teen books. I’ll be posting them in upcoming Shelve It!’s. (I’ve tried to post one here, but I’m apparently in doofus mode and can’t figure out how to make it work.)

If you don’t feel like waiting for the next Shelve It! (due out in a week or two), check them out here:
